Real Phantom News!

Dear Readers,
Today I talked with Dianne Nelson at the Wild Horse Sanctuary!
The real Phantom is doing great and once more living the rugged life of a wild horse. He's back down to fighting weight -- literally -- and has a few bite marks. Dianne tells me none passed his hair and he doesn't seem to notice them. He's protecting his herd like the mustang he is!
Do you remember me saying that the Phantom tolerated Lily, the white mare, but didn't love her? Lily is the only one he's allowed to be stolen. Dianne says he might know more than we humans, since horses that appear white may carry a lethal gene which is responsible for their foals dying painfully within 12 hours of birth. So he let her go, without a fight. Is Nature amazing or what?
Phantom's Pride has turned silver! I will have to go see him soon and I promise to take photos, even if they're not professional quality.
Speaking of that -- two National Geographic magazine photographers have been to the Wild Horse Sanctuary recently and one caught the Phantom rearing, warning off a roan stallion. The wild horse story won't appear for about a year, but we can still cross our fingers that the photo will be chosen for publication!
Happy trails,
Terri

ANGLOPHILES: the rest of your day is spoken for..

Dear Readers,
In honor of Celtic shapeshifters like my selkie pal Jesse (oh, and I suppose Harry Potter, too) you've got to polish up your British slang.
Go to WHOOHOO.CO.UK and play around a bit!
If you'd like to speak in a posh way ...

One loves playing with the whoohoo.co.uk british dialect translator. it's soh much geay!

Phantom stallion is cracking! Heavens above! How smashing!

If you'd rather have an Irish lilt to your email ...

IRISH: Oi jist finished writin' a new buk!

Or, RHYMING COCKNEY SLANG is code talking(for secrets or to keep outsiders um, outside!)
It uses words that rhyme with the real word. For instance, in the sentence below Captain Hook = Book

Me mother's pearly gate new Captain Hook is aahhht!

Have fun!!!

Bad News

Dear Readers,
I'm heartsick to tell you that 55 wild horses and an antelope have been found dead near a water hole in the middle of Nevada, near Nellis Air Force Base. An investigation is underway and clean water is being trucked in, now that the reporters are letting the public in on what's happened.
There are ugly rumors about this situation. When I have facts, I'll clue you in.
Hope you'll hold good thoughts for all the wildlife out there,
Terri

Out for a Run

Dear Readers,
Want to start Monday with a smile? Check out this great French horse.

http://uncutvideo.aol.com/events/Real-or-Fake/7800044b00ba43be01e8b46f905cd764?index=9

Did he join the Criterium International bike race (not the Tour de France) because he felt competitive, or was he following his herd instincts?
The swift chestnut didn't bump a single cyclist and left the race shortly before the finish line, allowing a human to win!
Enjoy,
Terri

Dear Reader/Writer/Rider,
I was paging through a copy of WESTERN HORSEMAN magazine and came upon what looks like a great contest.
The entry form indicates you have to be a horse owner, and be willing to write a short story or expression of why you love your horse, and then you are entered into a RANDOM drawing. So, even if you're not confident that you're the best writer in the world, you have a good chance to win a very cool horse trailer.
Here's the link:
http://steakandbeanstrailer.ca/

Read all of the info carefully, and it might be worth having a friend or parent read over all the stuff, too.
I hope one of my readers is the winner!!!!!!!

WILD HORSE ISLAND faq

Have you had any thoughts about extending the Wild Horse Island series to more than eight books, like the Phantom Stallion series?
Yes...it's hard to decide, though, since I have some other books I want to writer, too! -

Is there a real 'Iolani Ranch?
No, but the ranch where I researched the style of the paniolo is a lot like 'Iolani Ranch! It's called Dahana Ranch and it's on the Big Island of Hawaii.

How did you find the Dahana Ranch?

I was searching for paniolo style horsemen and came across Harry Nakoa, the trainer and owner at Dahana Ranch and I got in touch with Kiyo and they welcomed me to their bunkhouse! You can explore the ranch, its people and horses at: DahanaRanch.com

How did the real Hoku catch your eye and become the model for the Hoku in WILD HORSE ISLAND?
I just saw her wandering around the ranch yard and fell in love. One person said, "Oh no, if you like sorrels, look at Pua." I did, and she's a beauty, but something about Hoku just hooked my heart. The second time I went back, I rode her and wow...wow...wow...

I had no idea there were cowboys & cowgirls in Hawaii. How did you find out about them?
Paniolo have been in my head since I was a little girl. There was a one sentence reference to them in my fourth grade California history book!

WHEN DOES THE NEXT WHI BOOK COME OUT???

August 21! And I can hardly wait. It was so much fun to write and not only does it have an incredible cover, but it's full of island magic.
Take a peek here: http://www.phantomstallion.com/whi.html click on the ORANGE flower and see if you can find the rainbow
Aloha,
Terri

Wild Horse alert

Dear Readers,
I hope you'll read "Tuesday's Horse" blog http://www.tuesdayshorse.blogspot.com/ especially the first item about Nevada's wild horses. Keep in mind, Nevada is experiencing record temperatures this week: 105 in northern Nevada and 116 in southern Nevada.
All of the news in the column is fascinating and the last item shows the prettiest zhorse (zebra-horse cross :) not a typo) I've ever seen.
Best,
Terri

GETTING INTERACTIVE: with foals & you

Dear Readers,
Do you have a young horse? Would you like help in figuring out what sort of future -- dressage, jumping, pleasure riding -- she's best suited for, right now?
A long-term French study has put together a series of tests (involving unusual stimulus, like umbrellas!Does that remind you of WILD HONEY?) which will help you see your horse's true temperament.
Here's a link to check it out: http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/news/2007/01/021.shtml

For those of you who've asked:
YES I DO plan to do the interactive chat here: http://www.girlshorseclub.com/wordpress/exciting-news-for-phantom-stallion-fans/2007/06/22/ but the Lead Mare and I have been missing each other's messages!

Happy summer,
Terri

Dream Echoes

Dear Readers,
All I can tell you is that I felt chills. In an earlier blog, I mentioned that I would be signing books and donating the proceeds to a fundraiser for the REAL Mrs. Allen(no, I didn't know her when I wrote that -- more about that in a later entry), but I had no idea how much fun I'd have and how many cool people I'd meet, or get to see again.

One woman was WONDERFUL enough to show me an old black and white photograph of a white stallion hiding in the sagebrush. She's been a friend of the horses all her life and this was a photo of -- hold your breath -- the real Phantom's great grandsire!

I wish you could have been there.
Best,
Terri
