News from WILD HORSE ISLAND

Dear Readers,

My new series will have extras that I'm just too excited to keep secret until May 22!

FRONT OF THE BOOK

* A very cool map -- more detailed than before!

BACK OF THE BOOK

* Darby's Diary -- if you moved to an exotic island, you might want to write down some private thoughts about people and places (and horses), right? You get to peek over Darby's shoulder as she does just that
* Darby's Dictionary -- when you're the new girl on the island, it helps to have a "cheat sheet" for slang and unfamiliar words that are just part of everyday language in Hawaii

And, I'm not sure where this will go yet, but my fingers are crossed that you'll see :

* Hawaiian Author photo with the filly that inspired my cover horse! You won't have to guess why I look happy :)

Happy trails,
Terri

Volcano

Dear Readers,
I know volcanoes are making life dangerous for some of you in New Zealand, Australia and Sumatra. Please do your best to stay safe.
Even if you're not too near, take care to protect your lungs! I know I'm not your mother, but I don't want you to have a lifelong souvenir of this week!
Thinking of you,

Big news on real Phantom & family

Dear Readers,
I have loads of real Phantom & family news for you, today.
First, the wild mare Shy has really earned her name! She was so careful about keeping humans away from her foal that they guessed wrong on the baby's gender!
He's a colt, not a filly!
Everyone was surprised, but even experts can be fooled when a wild mare stands between the world and her baby!
How will this effect the contest to name the young mustang? Hardly at all -- the panel is still mulling over all the wonderfulentries sent by PHANTOM STALLION readers! The colt's coat is staying black so far, too.
Speaking of color, the Phantom will have a "rainbow harem" when he's set free in the Wild Horse Sanctuary. In addition to bay Shy and white Lily (the colt's favorite auntie), the Phantom has a new palomino mare he likes a lot. And, last Thursday, the Phantom added a "strikingly beautiful black mare" to his band.
All three new mares have . My fingers are crossed that I can talk with their former owners, then share those stories with you.
Owners??? Yes, just like my fictional Dark Sunshine, these mares were adopted as adult horses and had trouble adjusting to captivity. Due to their caring adopters, though, they'll be enjoying the next best thing to freedom when they're released, along with the Phantom, into the huge northern California sanctuary.
Happy trails,
Terri

ONE HORSE

Dear Readers,
I had to share this skillful & touching piece of writing with you. Many people asked me why the world cared about Barbaro's injury, good-natured struggle to survive and his death. This editorial does a wonderful job of answering that question.
Happy trails, Terri

ONE HORSE
January 30, 2007 editorial from the NEW YORK TIMES

Why should we feel so much grief at the loss of one horse? After all, this is a world in which horses are sacrificed again and again for the sport of humans. Barbaro was euthanized yesterday, eight months after he shattered his right hind leg at the start of the Preakness Stakes. After an injury like that, most racehorses would have been put down minutes later. But every race is a complex equation — a balance of economics, athleticism, equine grace and conscience. Conscience often comes in last, but not in this case. Barbaro’s owners gave that horse exactly what he had given them, which is everything. It was the very least they could do, and yet it seemed truly exceptional in a sport that is as often barbarous as it is beautiful.
Barbaro was exceptional because he won the Kentucky Derby and looked as if he might have a chance at the Triple Crown. But nearly everyone who met him also talked of the life he displayed, a vivid presence that was so much more visible to us because it happened to belong to a winner.
Humans are not especially good at noticing horses, but Barbaro was easy to notice. And if his life caused us to pay attention to the possibilities of all horses, his death should cause us to pay attention to the tragedy inherent in the end of so many horses. Barbaro’s death was tragic not because it was measured against the races he might have won or even against the effort to save his life. It was tragic because of what every horse is.
You would have to look a long, long time to find a dishonest or cruel horse. And the odds are that if you did find one, it was made cruel or dishonest by the company it kept with humans. It is no exaggeration to say that nearly every horse — Barbaro included — is pure of heart. Some are faster, some slower. Some wind up in the winner’s circle. But they should all evoke in us the generosity of conscience — a human quality, after all — that was expended in the effort to save this one horse.

Free Books from a bookstore so big, you'd love to get lost there

Dear Readers,
Here's a chance for those of you who've read SEVEN TEARS INTO THE SEA http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?inkey=17-9780689864421-0 or THE RENEGADE http://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/biblio?isbn=9780064410885&atch=r&atchi=86657136 or any of my books to win FREE BOOKS from one of the best bookstores on earth, just by entering your review of your favorites.
Those of you who have visited Powell's books in Oregon won't be surprised to hear it's one of my top 3 favorite bookstores in the world.
The first time my family visited, we were just "passing through" Portland on our way to go camping. We stopped and loved it so much that we left to have dinner & came back. Then, we decided to stay the night in Portland because we HAD to go back in the morning!
What's so cool about it? It's BLOCKS long & wide. It has a combination of new and used books. The employees aren't just people who maybe worked in a mall ear piercing pagoda the week before; they're knowledgeable booksellers of whom you can ask -- "Hey, I like author blah-blah and she doesn't have any books coming out for a year. Who should I read that's similar?"
It is such a huge & jam-packed store, it's common to hear people being paged when they've lost their friends down one of the hundreds of aisles.
If you go to http://powells.com/ you can "window shop" for books you might pick out if you win!
Have fun,
Terri

Phantom's Filly

Dear Readers,
The contest to name the Phantom & Shy's filly ended yesterday morning. I've mailed off the hundreds of entries to the Wild Horse Sanctuary in Shingletown, California. The entries were wonderful, creative & I'm glad that I don't have to help decide on the winner.
As soon as I learn the decision, I'll post the filly's new name on Phantomstallion.com.
I sent a copy of RAIN DANCE along with the entries and because I didn't have one on my bookcase, I bought a copy at Sundance Bookstore and had a nice surprise! I've never seen the book without the little starburst announcing a HarperCollins contest and so I saw, for the first time, the puddle Tempest was playing in had a rainbow reflection in it. So pretty!
Happy trails,
Terri

Attention Writers

HI,
Although the name of this contest made me think it was JUST for first chapters, it's not. Still, if you have a finished book (no time to polish, I'm afraid, since the deadline is only days away), winning a contest that guarantees publication by Simon & Schuster and support by the Borders bookstores, plus $5,000 is not too shabby!

http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474976881780

You might take a look & see what you think.
Even if you don't have a book completed, you might enjoy reading the first chapters already posted.
Enjoy!

Horse Book

HI,
You might want to check out MOONSHADOW by Chris Platt.
Chris is the author of WILLOW KING and a former jockey and her writing shows she's knows what she's talking about when it comes to horses.
Enjoy,
Terri

Jillaroos

Dear Readers,
I've heard from my readers about Jillaroo and Jackaroo camp in Australia and it sounds so exciting -- a different kind of cowgirling than I write about, but I know you'll want to check it out.
Here's are links to camps
http://www.blackmountainhideaway.com.au/jillaroo.htm

http://www.owh.com.au/cms.cfm?cmsid=43

And this one is for people who actually want to WORK on stations -- or as I call them in my books, ranches -- in Australia

Have fun daydreaming!
