Out of my cave
Dear Readers,
One truth of my life as a writer is that I spend a lot of time alone. That means passing up evenings at the movies, afternoons at the lake and other fun things. Luckily, most of my friends understand that I’m not a hermit. Sitting alone in my office with imaginary people, places and horses, is part of my job and I love it!
However, I’ve made a few trips out into the real world lately and that’s been fun, too, so I thought I’d tell you what I’ve been doing.
Groundhog Day -- My husband and I drove through major snowstorms so I could do a benefit booksigning at Barnes & Noble in Redding, California for Grandview School, talk to readers and applaud a Year of the Rat dragon!
The next day: I spent an afternoon signing books at the Artists Co-Op in Reno, Nevada, surrounded by horse paintings, horse photography, horse jewelry (I couldn’t resist a turquoise & copper pin), horse sculpture and baskets made of old lariats and horse hair -- 2 of the 3 I bought were gifts. Really.
Last weekend, we drove through more snow -- this time with Zito in the backseat -- to Clayton Books, a great independent bookstore in northern California, where I had lots of fun signing, talking with readers & discussing my movie WILD ONES.
Yesterday: had a great time with three classes of 4th graders & one class of 1st graders at Verdi Elementary School. We talked about horses, wrote persuasive letters and they introduced me to a cool piece of classroom technology called an ActiveBoard (I think).
Today, I had an Indian curry lunch with endurance riders from Nevada, California and Australia! Dovie has me excited about writing a book set in the world of endurance riding. I was flattered when Leila from MacLean, NSW, recognized me as her best friend’s (Hi Abbie!) favorite author. Crysta shared photos of her MUSTANG endurance horse, Sinatra (he has blue eyes & I may meet him at the Ride of March). I can’t wait to visit Jay’s website (she trains riders from all over the world). Beck, Jean, Jane and Kim were friendly & rubbing their hands together with evil intent (oh wait, that was me) as they offered dirty tricks for my fictional villains!
Early next week, I’m going to Washington, D.C. where I’ll not only be lobbying for horses, but my fingers are crossed that I’ll be able to sign a few books and meet some faraway readers!
After all that excitement, I’ll be missing my computer, cave and imaginary friends.
