Paniolos on Parade

Aloha !
If you've never been lucky enough to see a real Hawaiian cowboy & his horse, you might want to check this out:

Paniolo

The maile (that's what they're wearing) is a long lasting lei and it's open-end horseshoe shape makes it best for riding all day! My research indicates these are probably the most similar to leis worn by the early Hawaiians.
These leaves smell great & remind me a teeny bit of sagebrush

Enjoy your holo-holo,
Terri

Comments: Champion pics! Wish I could go to Hawaii and see them all for real. I've been to the Bahamas... I wonder if they have many horses or if their customs are about the same?

Cool pictures. Thanks. And Rach, my parents went to the Bahamas and they saw ponies and horses just tied to trees in the middle of nowhere. Or outside peoples huts with just ropes around their necks.
Wow, those are cool! Although, when I read WHI, I imagined the paniolos looking differently. Like how Cade wants to be one, so he acts and dresses like one, with the poncho and leis. I always imagined them differently, but now I know how they look, so I know how to imagine them! Thanks!
  Katie,
Don't forget, these riders are parading. I'll see if I can find a photo of working paniolos! There's a great book called ROUGH RIDERS which is all about the paniolo tradition.
Cool pics! I'll google Rough Riders and see if i can find some info! I'm really interested in paniolos!
Terri, it may be hard to explain, but what does sagebrush smell like? I have no clue!
